Resources available to help you locate or maintain your current housing.

There are a number of programs and organizations that assist with various housing needs. Whether you are a family, individual, or person with disability, the agencies below can assist you or point you in the right direction.

211 United Way is a general resource for locating assistance with housing and other needs. By dialing 211 on your phone, you will have immediate access to several local organizations that can assist you.

Doorway is an online portal for locating and applying for affordable housing throughout the Bay Area.

Marin Housing Authority is a public corporation that assists with various housing needs. Programs include, but are not limited to, the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8), affordable housing, and housing assistance.

Community Action Marin offers a range of programs that assist with housing and everyday life needs. Programs include rental and utility assistance.

North Marin Community Services offers support with various needs with a focus in Novato and North Marin. Programs include but are not limited to housing support, such as rental assistance, and other supportive services.

West Marin Community Services assists with various needs with a focus on the West Marin area. Programs include but are not limited to rental assistance, heat, food, car, and home repair.

Tenant/Landlord Assistance Programs

Legal Aid of Marin provides legal representation and services for eviction protection and tenant rights. Services are available to low-income families and individuals.

Fair Housing Advocates of Northern California assists families and individuals with fair housing-related concerns, tenant rights, foreclosure prevention, and counseling.

Marin County District Attorney, Consumer Mediation / Landlord-Tenant provides voluntary mediation services for landlord/tenant disputes across Marin County. Services are open to everyone at all income levels.

Marin County Superior Court Self-Help Center provides free assistance to those who do not have attorneys.

Marin County Law Library provides legal resources, including a Lawyers in the Library program which offers a free 20 minute one-on-one meeting with a volunteer attorney.

Other Housing Programs

Ritter Center assists homeless communities with resources to locate housing, rental assistance for individuals and families in poverty, case management services, and food.

St. Vincent De Paul offers case management services, housing and crisis assistance programs, and free dining room services to those in need.

Homeward Bound of Marin provides shelter to homeless individuals, families, people struggling with mental illness, and veterans. Other programs include but are not limited to, case management services and assistance with obtaining housing.

Gilead House homeless shelter provides a stable home environment for homeless single mothers and their children. Other programs include family advocacy, mental health services, and mentorship.

Center for Domestic Peace provides immediate shelter for abused or at risk of abuse, women, youth, children, and men. Programs include but are not limited to transitional housing, counseling services, support groups, and legal services.

Marin Center for Independent Living serves individuals living with all types of disabilities. Programs include but are not limited to rental assistance, case management services, and assistance accessing and maintaining affordable housing.

Integrated Community Services assists people with disabilities with securing stable housing, career advisory, and many other services that help drive independence.

Marin Housing Authority runs various Home Ownership programs for low-income and first-time owners. Programs include but are not limited to the below Market Rate program, Residential Rehab Loan, and Home Buyer Readiness Program.

California Housing Finance Agency, also known as CalHFA supports the housing needs of low- and moderate-income renters and homebuyers by providing financial assistance programs.

Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco offers programs that support building and preserving homes to provide more equitable and affordable homeownership opportunities to families in Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties.

Community Land Trust (CLT)

What is a Community Land Trust (CLT)? A Community Land Trust is a legal entity that takes ownership and authority over a piece of land. Homes on land owned by a trust are available for sale to homebuyers. However, the land will be under the ownership and authority of the Land Trust. When a property resides on land owned by a Land Trust, the land costs are removed from homebuyer transactions. Making home ownership more affordable and accessible to Individuals and families.
